Growth hormone deficiency is a disorder in which the pituitary gland fails to produce enough amounts of growth hormone in the body. As growth hormone is not produced, growth is slower. Its deficiency occurs at any age. This article describes about the important causes and symptoms of hormonal deficiency.
Growth hormone is important for normal development of the child. In the case of adults, it is necessary for proper maintenance of bone, muscle and fat. Absence of this hormone in adults will lead to symptoms such as lack of motivation and tiredness.
Causes of Growth Hormone Deficiency
- This disorder is caused due to improper secretion of HGH by the pituitary gland. The disorder may be from birth or sometimes may develop due to infections, exposure to radiations or several other conditions.
- In adults, it may occur due to the presence of pituitary gland tumors.
- Children suffering from skull and face defects such as cleft palate also show low levels of growth hormone in their body.
- In case of brain injuries deficiency of growth hormone is seen.
- Hormonal problems and brain radiation treatment may also lead to deficiency of HGH.
- Abnormality of hormone receptors.
- Lack of sufficient amounts of oxygen at birth.
- In some cases, it may be hereditary.
Growth Hormone Deficiency – Symptoms
The common symptoms in case of children include:
- Growth of the child is lower than two inches in a year.
- Height of the child is less.
- Increased fat deposits are seen around waist and on the face.
- Delayed puberty.
- Weight gain.
- Muscle mass is decreased.
- The child looks much younger when compared to other children of his age.
- Tooth development is delayed.
Symptoms in case of adults:
- Low energy.
- Skin is dry and thin.
- Decreased strength.
- Depression and anxiety.
- Deficiency of hormone may lead to improper heart and skeletal functions.
